Something pretty cool happened this week. I got the news that I’ll be joining a software engineering team.
In this team, I’m going to work with containers in docker, which are basically Linux computers that have only the necessary requirements indicated by the user.
From this concept come others that I learned these days, such as “pods”, which are collections of two or more containers that interact with each other for a specific purpose.
Another concept that I learned was that of Kubernetes, which refers to the system for automation and scalability in the management of applications in containers, these live under the philosophy of always trying to reach the state that the user defines, that’s if it’s required that there’s a specific connection between two containers, the Kubernetes will try to achieve this connection several times until it achieves its goal.
The above is quite important when it comes to applications with several containers whose operation depends on each other, since it may happen that in a first attempt only a part of the entire necessary connection works, in this way the Kubernetes will try to lift the connection several times. Sometimes until it’s achieved, this entire process can be carried out manually, but Kubernetes takes care of it being carried out autonomously, so the time saved in the human effort is evident.

Another thing I learned thanks to the book “Make time” by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky is that our brain is designed to be distracted, this is due to our past as one more species on this planet, that is, when we were not yet the dominant species on this world; our brain works like this because in those ancient times paying attention to everything around us could mean another day of life, if you could hear the sound of a branch cracking in time, you could predict the attack of a predator, because it’s a such an efficient system is that we keep it to this day, with the misfortune that this means that we are a species with staying focused for long periods of time problems. One of the solutions that the book proposes to deal with this problem is to simply get rid of distractions, that is, turn off phones, screens or anything that catches our attention, having a work area without these distractions helps a lot without a doubt.
It should be noted that one should work for not very long periods of time since our attention and therefore performance decreases the more time we spend focused, one way to not let our attention lapse is to take breaks between each work session, but serious breaks, checking social networks will only make us fall into a distraction with many elements that demand our attention, so stopping and going back to work will be very difficult. It is recommended to read a book, go for a walk or do any activity that allows us to rest our senses and that is not very demanding.
